Perks of the Job, August 31st, 2010

Gleefully introducing patrons to my favorite costumes dramas when the ask for recommendations. I like to think I'm helping America become more classically cultured, if they tend to think Jane Austen is an actress who looks like Anne Hathaway or not.

When a bird somehow manages to deposit it's *ahem* business on my shirt between the car and the door (NOOOOOO!!!) My official "Lydia S. Platteville Public Library Technician 1" name tag thankfully covers the spot nicely saving my from a potentially embarrassing workplace wardrobe malfunction.

When people actually answer the phone when I call them (I've heard every single answering machine message in town. No joke.) they assume that I'm a recording, and hang up in the middle of my well rehearsed speech. Is my voice really that non-descript?

Noticing that Amish women tend to secretly read trashy romance paperbacks.
Actually I find that rather disturbing...

Me stupidly assuming that the bell sounds and pounding I was hearing were coming from the rather loud construction site next door, not (as it turned out to be) a young and by now hysterical child stuck in the library elevator.

I am constantly surprised by the ironic human-ness of humanity.

Some Handy Tips

If you know me well you know I'm not a big fan of the whole dating thing. In fact I'm an honorary of member of the famous IDD forum. But I am a HUGE Jane Austen/Elizabeth Gaskill/Period Dramas films fan, so when my Significant Other shows up, he'll probably find these handy tips useful :-)

(A sense of humor is a priceless accoutrement IMHO.)

(Sweet gesture, but not for me!
Now some lovely roses would be a different matter entirely...
I suppose it's the thought that counts:-)

(Good piece of advice, bad example!)

(That is... if you HAVE sword-fighting skills, if not, please no!)

I love happy endings...

It won't be like this again until 01/01/2101.

A Clarificatioin and Some Random Thoughts.

Clarification: Joe didn't not "hack" my blog. I accidentally left myself signed in.

What can I say? Brothers make life interesting.

Randomness 1: Mom, Luke Joe and I are leaving (ideally) at 9 to go to Ohio for a speech and debate competition. This is regionals and I'm really hoping to qualify for Nationals, but if we don't I'm sure we'll still have an amazingly awesome time.

Randomness 2:We got a video camera so you can go to Joe's Blog: http://southpawinthehouse.blogspot.com for video updates.

Randomness 3: Mom, Susie and I just answered all three of the phones at the same time.

Randomness 4: Speaking of Susie, it's her birthday today! Happy Birthday Dear!

Randomness 5: Another one of my classmates is engaged. That makes 5 (I think). I'm super happy for them, but it's weird. We're all growing up so fast.

Randomness 6: Cowgirl_E is in TX. We made a grand scheme for me to go down there with them.... it sounded lovely but it was not meant to be. *sniff*

Randomness 7: This is my new favorite song from a musical:

Randomness 8: I'll be home Sunday night in time to see the last episode of Little Dorrit (my new favorite mini-series) I love Dickens, but sometimes he drives me bonkers. I have NO IDEA what's going to happen. All I gotta say is Arthur and Amy better end up together or I will be MOST DISPLEASED!

Non-Randomness 1: I promise someday soon this blog will become less random.

Acts 2:38

A woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services , when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled:
'Stop! Acts 2:38!' (Repent and be Baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.)
The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar: 'Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.'
'Scripture?' replied the burglar. 'She said she had an Axe and Two 38s! I don't want no trouble'

I haven't done a "Me Lately" post in... forever.

I'm Excited About.... My new laptop. Okay, so it's new to me. It was Debi's and then somebody managed to break it. Debi got a (really nice) new one and David fixed the old one so it's now mine. A certain party that we won't mention by name thinks it's junkie, but it's mine, so I love it.

I've been Writing... Pure randomness. Since I have a wonderful laptop to write on I've had the writing bug. I started a story (if you can call a page and half a start) and we'll see where it goes. I've been wondering lately if I actually am I writer. Sometime "genius burns" as Jo March says it, but most of the time I only have a few embers. I have to write sometimes to get all the pictures in my head onto paper. I do admit last night I turned my light on at midnight to write a scene down, I couldn't sleep with it running through my head.

I've been Wearing... My totally awesome monkey sock/slippers. They're like slippers but feel like a really thick sock on your foot.Sorry, no picture, the batteries in the camera are dead.

I'm Reading... The sequel to Alcatraz vs. The Evil Librarians. I can't say anything for the sequel (I'm about 30 pages in) but the first book, I can honestly say, is the funniest book I have ever read (I would say Princess Bride being a close 2nd.) I think I like the Alcatraz books because they're very much my sense of humor. Completely random. I also can not honestly call it a "wholesome" or "Christian" book. It's fantasy so there is some stuff that might be considered "magical". (They explain it as advanced technology, so there's no real magic.) I picked it up at first because I'm a librarian and it looked amusing. If you want to read a book for pure amusement's sake read Alcatraz Vs. The Evil Librarians.

I'm Watching... The Andy Griffith Show. I always forget how much I love that show. Aunt Bee is so cute, so is Opie, Barney is hilarious, and Andy is Andy.

I've Been Thinking About... My Grandpa's birthday. He's turning 70 on Christmas Eve Day (I always thought that was weird... Christmas Eve Day, kind of an oxymoron.) I got him a really nice present that I think he'll like. Hopefully, because I'm not the best present-buyer.

My Plans for This Weekend Are... Babysit tonight, go to a sledding party tomorrow afternoon, write, sleep, read, maybe go to a move...

I'm Listening to... Days Of Elijah by Twila Paris.

What I want for Christmas... These Extremely Cute Shoes.

Randomness... I wore my checkered flannel PJs until after 10 today. I was wearing them under my overalls under my big DQ sweatshirt under my jacket. Can anyone say snow storm?

Quote of the Day... "A smile cost nothing but gives much. It takes but a moment, but the memory last forever."

I'm Wondering...How I'm supposed to post, listen to some music and sing along, write, chat with Erica and read a book and do some school at the same time. Also, why am I trying to do all that at the same time? (I admit, the school is getting the least attention.)

I'm Questioning... Whether people like to read my blog or just do it out of obligation, is it interesting and fun, or just a chore?

God is... Merciful.

Life is... Busy

Children are... Adorable.

I am... Me.

Thankful Thursday #24 Thanksgiving Edition

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

No contest.

I was trying to think of something deep, unique and poetic to say about Thanksgiving, but I guess I'm not in a uniquely deep poetic mood today.

So I'm going to do a very normal thing I'm going to make a list. 17 items for the 17 years I've been alive. There's some serious stuff, some random, and some normal stuff, Enjoy!!

1.) Family. My family is unusual, flawed and very imperfect, but I wouldn't even think about exchanging growing up with them for the most normal, flawless, perfect family in the world.
2.) Friends. I am very blessed to have a great circle of very close non-related friends, people I can trust my life with, people who laugh with me and cry with me. You know who you are and you people better get used to me, because I'm not giving you up for a long while!
3.)A great job. I love my job, it's awesome. God knew just what I wanted to do and he fixed it so I didn't even do anything to get it, it was all him. I have a wonderful group of co-workers who are really nice people, they need Jesus and I pray that I can be a witness to them.
4.) Being Homeschooled. People might disagree with me, but I honestly think I wouldn't have made it through public school. Without the dedicated teaching of my mom I would be no where with my school work. I'll be graduating this spring, something totally unbelievable to me right now.
5.) Living in Small Town Wisconsin. I truly love small town America. The friendliness, the laid-back atmosphere, where everybody knows everybody and life is muffins and jam. (Okay, so it's not quite that great, but I had to be poetic somehow!)
6.)Books. I love books. See yesterdays post to sum up my feelings on reading.
7.) This daring adventure that we call Life. I'm alive, I live, I breath, that's a miracle in it's self.
8.) Ice Cream.
9.) My church.
10.) Those ink pens that make my handwriting look good.
11.) A God who always cares, never gives up and has a sense of humor.
12.) Afternoon shopping sprees where you try on a lot and by little.
13.) Quotes. Can anyone say "My Mother is always in excellent health thank you."? LOL
14.) Skype. Skype is awesome, wonderful, stupendous, incredible, marvelous, the best invention of the 21 century.
15.)Moments of complete happiness.
16.) Strength for today and...
17.) A bright hope for tomorrow.

What on earth...?

The take-out box was warm against my lap.

Mom and I chatted pleasantly about nothing much in particular, Luke tested out how it felt to put his tongue in the place where one of his front teeth had been. I had plenty of unused brain to engaged in thought.

"Boy Lyd, what's with your blog, you try to post once a day for a month and all you come up with is "I'm glad it's half-way through November." Where is your old creativity????

I was slightly ticked at myself.

I vaguely noticed two squad cars at the stop light as we turned toward home.

"Somebody's in trouble..."

Mom turned into our neighborhood, as in the flash of the headlights I caught a glimpse of two beads of lights about 4 feet off the ground-

"MOM STOP!!!" I cried.

I lurched forward against the dashboard, the car squealed to a stop.

Silence reigned as we stared at the road in front of us.

"Mom..." Luke sounded uncertain. "That's a cow?"

Cow? More like cows. A whole heard of them. In the middle of the street. Blocking the road home.

We were a bit shocked.

It was past sunset but suddenly the night was filled with flashing lights and loud voices.

The police had arrived to do what they do.

Ensure public safety and apprehend ummm... criminals.

Rather than handcuffs and guns these umm... criminals, were controlled by the good ol' arm waving, flashlight chasing and "GET GOING!! SHOO!!"

Recovering my surprise I glanced at Mom.

She was practically chocking with laughter.

"That's not funny." She said.

"But it really is!" we said at the same time, smiling ourselves silly.

"That's not something you see everyday." I pointed out.

"That's not something you'd see any day." Mom countered.

As we drove home in the cleared street I made a mental note. "That was something to post about."

Join the P___ Police Department!!
Stop criminals, do public service!
and maybe even herd cattle!!

Your Vote Counts!!!

It happened again.
I got bored with my profile picture.

So I've been trying to take self-portraits lately.

Most of them were fuzzy
or blurry,
or I had a weird look,
or a big zit.

But a couple of them were decent.

So vote and tell me which one you like the best!

1.) The normal self-portrait. Me looking decidedly away from the lenses.

2.) A Classic Happy pose although it was hard to act natural with Erica holding the camera a foot from my face saying "Act natural! That smile is SO fake!"

3.)Me attempting to be artistic. Notice my pretty hair, I spent an hour and a half on it.

4.) Erica's favorite of the lot. Notice my not pretty, but nether the less interesting hair.

You Gotta Love it...

Andy:[Picking up the phone] Sarah? What? Just soak it. That's right; just soak it a lot in warm water. Listen, Sarah; get me Thelma Lou. I know she's Barney's girl; just get her on the phone. What? 'Cause I don't want to. No, Sarah, I wouldn't rather talk to Juanita at the diner; just get Thelma Lou.

Clarification...

Bravo Mrs. I!!! You got it right. The italicized words were french.

"Bad news ladies and gents My Brain is now an endangered creature, it's close to extinction!! It's predators school and life are growing in numbers and are overpowering this helpless creature. Please Help!!"

As explanation, lets just say I was tired and my brain was fried, and I never wanted to see another research paper again.
