Frigidarium: A True Story (Of Sorts)

I was trying to compose in my head

A poem, on my way to the shed

(Or garage, but that's hard to rhythm)

And I was taking my precious time

Being optimistic poetic me,

Not knowing what was going to shortly be.

The male members of our home

Wanted cake, frozen and under a dome

Of the ice cream variety

So I'd gone with female piety

To fetch it from the freezer

(I've been told I'm a people pleaser)

My mother told me to surely go

Making sure not to stub a toe

Through the back door since it wasn't locked

As the normal way between the cars was blocked.

My new poem was meant to rhapsodize

On how the magnolia petals lie.

How they crunch beneath my feet

As I walk on their soft, unblemished sheet.

I wanted to rhyme how the night air

And the cricket's beat transports me somewhere.

While my mind was on that

I pulled the door close so it didn't bat

And bang in the wind annoyingly

And bother my mother worry-ingly

I picked my way over garage-y stuff

Which I can tell you, is tough

When one is in pitch darkness

With only a small light in the mess.

I opened the freezer to discover

There wasn't light there neither!

I exclaimed my displeasure

And then felt around for good measure.

But it was a bigger than normal ice box

And I felt out smarted by the fox

Of my own absentmindedness

It was silly of me, I must confess

Not to remember a flashlight

Yet on went I with all my might

And stuck in both my arms

Never thinking of the harms

But I lost my footing

Horizontally positioning was my ending

And then my wandering hands

Came up empty... oh my Lands!

I was stuck in the cooler

Could I be more of a fooler?

Stuck like Pooh, half in half out.

I was most definitely a lout

And believe me, it hurt

As cold began seeping through my night shirt.

I struggled for a moment

And only manged to get more bent

I stopped and started considering

If nosily yelling and bellowing

Was in any way dignified.

If I told myself it was, I would have lied.

In this moment of self reflection

To my amazement and fun

Found the cake that I'd been sent for

Only to end up stuck in the freezer door.

I pulled at it much too promptly

Considering my task fait accompli

Then the lid came off, and with it the cake

How much more of a mess could I make?

I somehow caught them both right side up

But felt most unhappy and cutup.

I was stuck, in the dark

Balancing ice cream cake, what a lark!

Then, Oh rapturous joy unbound!

The wondrous mother of mine had found

Her daughter gone quite long

And worried something might be wrong.

She called from the entry way

To hurry and not delay!

I begged her to turn on the light

And to aid me in my desperate plight.

But alas, my muffled voice

Did not transport, she had no choice

But misunderstand me

And although I could finally see

For, the light she switched on

But to my aid, came none.

I urged myself out with relief

Happy to get past it with my teeth

Deciding not to go the way I came

In truth, I felt rather lame.

I snaked my way between the cars,

Almost like prison bars.

It was not nice going, I admit.

I was near on at the end of my wit

When on the hitching post

My Pj's caught, (this is not a boast!)

I tugged them free at last

And made my way fast

To the door to get inside

And I do not think I cried.

But then, of course, it was locked,

And I sighed and (loudly) knocked.

Only to have it opened to hear

After everything "The cake is not needed, my dear.”

So instead I ate Greek yogurt

(Healthier by far) but I still wanted to blurt

Out my woes to you, my friends

To the trivial my life does tend.

Yet it has it's almost charming in the end,

A funny story, is how I defend.

Such horrid rhythms and no meter

I apologies most humbly dear reader.

At the last you must know

The moral to this unnecessary show

Is that poetry is dangerous

And always cause a ruckus.

Ignore poetic magnolias soft and sweet

If you want to keep your feet!

(*Disclaimer* I have never professed to be anything close to a poet. Mostly I just like thought in short verse and capitalizing words in the middle of sentences ;-P)

*Much thanks to Merrill for her awesome-ness!

22) If Mars had earthquakes would they be called marsquakes?
23) Do glow-in-the-dark objects stop glowing when someone turns on the lights?

Some Handy Tips

If you know me well you know I'm not a big fan of the whole dating thing. In fact I'm an honorary of member of the famous IDD forum. But I am a HUGE Jane Austen/Elizabeth Gaskill/Period Dramas films fan, so when my Significant Other shows up, he'll probably find these handy tips useful :-)

(A sense of humor is a priceless accoutrement IMHO.)

(Sweet gesture, but not for me!
Now some lovely roses would be a different matter entirely...
I suppose it's the thought that counts:-)

(Good piece of advice, bad example!)

(That is... if you HAVE sword-fighting skills, if not, please no!)

That Day that Comes But Once a Year...

I am currently in my own personal heaven on earth. Just stepping over the doorstep of the farm house makes me blissfully happy :-)

It's because this big farm house surrounded by never-ending fields is home to some of my favorite people.

And when we all get together once a year we're bound to have at least a little fun.

For these faces, and my friends and family

I am truly Thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I Have A Double LIfe

By day, most of you know me as a sweet-tempered Librarian.

But sometimes, at night, when the wind is right (aka, when I'm in the mood) my secret life calls me...

and I travel back to the 1940's and my life....

... as a Vogue model.

"Life is Best Served With Chocolate"

Right now I am wearing Chocolate Perfume.
I'm dead serious, it smells like chocolate.
If you're worried about my sanity,
I didn't spend any money on it.
Rebecca got a sample of it,
she said I "Was the only
person I know who
is crazy enough
to wear it."
;-)

Chocolate perfume?

You Know You're From a Big Family If...

-There are pictures of your family in matching outfits
-You write your name on the bottom of your socks
-You go to the bathroom just to get some "alone time"
-You never say "I'm bored"
-You have valuable negotiating skills and have honed them from a very young age
-You know that just because someone says your sibling's name, it doesn't mean they're not talking to you
-You find creative ways to hide things you want to keep for yourself
-You've seen your mother walking laps around your property so she can get a few minutes of peace & quiet
-You shake your head in disbelief when you hear someone say they've never changed a diaper
-One sibling is getting on your nerves it's okay because you can just go hang out with a different one
-Strangers think that big sister is actually mom
-If you want some ice cream, you don't wait around to get some, because tomorrow it will be gone
-You wouldn't trade the fact that you have the opportunity to make a bunch of best friends that are stuck with you for life!
-Whenever your family goes out to eat the waiters always have to put tables together for you and when they do it is always in the back corner of the restaurant so as to keep your stereotypically rude family away from their other customers
-People continually comment that you could have a whole basketball team, or even better a baseball team
-You have laughed at all the cars that were stuck in traffic on the freeway while you flew by in the carpool lane
-Your mom is trying to say someone's name and she's already gone through 6 sibs' names, she probably is trying to remember yours
-You aren't worried about getting beat up at the playground, because if someone messes with one sibling they mess with ALL of you.
-You are proficient in cleaning up broken glass and ceramic and you can tell from the sound it made when it crashed whether the item dropped is fine, cracked, or broken
-You can hear a cry and tell whether the child is hurt, angry, sad or throwing a temper tantrum within 3 seconds
-You're walking around a store with little siblings and people assume they're your kids
-You start to pile out of the van, and your dad proudly turns to the people who's house you've just invaded and mentions something about the Normandy Invasion
-Your family can't fit in a mini-van
-Instead of learning from your own mistakes, you learn from your siblings'
-You are the shyest person in the world, but the loudest in your family
-Other people "don't understand how your mom does it"
-Your parents want you to do something, and they usually tell another sibling to tell you to do it
-You've gotten hand-me-downs from older siblings
-You routinely hide choice foods/leftovers so no one else will eat it all before you can get some
-You own enough books to start a library
-Your family has paid enough overdue fines to fund the building of a new library
-Picky eaters are not tolerated because mom simply does not have the time to prepare different foods for one child
-You go anywhere before 3:00 on a week day and people ask if your class is on a field trip
-You go looking to purchase a new appliance and the capacity is the only feature that really matters
-People continually ask you to repeat yourself after you told them how many children are in your family like they must have heard incorrectly
-Everything under the sun is discussed for an hour straight around the dinner table because everyone has to put their two bits in
-Your brother leans over your shoulder and corrects your grammar and spelling while you type on this site. (grrr!)
-You smile when people ask how many kids you have because you know when you answer they will repeat the number even more loudly to help themselves hear it
-Your family is referred to as a clan, pack, horde, gang or gaggle
- You invite your friend(s) over and they feel like they're a part of your family
-The invention of the wide-angled lens made your family portrait possible.
-Getting from one side of your living room to the other requires skillfully making it through an obstacle course of toys, coloring books (plus the spilled crayons), school books, extra chairs dragged in from other rooms, and small children
-You've been asked over and over if you're Mormon, Catholic or homeschooled
-You have to bribe the trash men to take all of your family’s garbage
-You take your driver's license test in a 15 passenger van
-You bring a friend who's an only child over for dinner and they just stare in shock, confusion and awe for 90% of the time!
-You are frequently compared to Russian dolls because you all look so much alike
-At your family reunions there are more cousins in your family than in all the others combined
-Everyone comments about how cute your daughter looks when you carry your three-year old sister around at Wal-Mart
-You shared a room with no less than three people for most of your childhood
-You have to squeeze four people in a row of seats in your van that was only designed to hold three
-You're 28 and you still have a few siblings under 6th grade
-You're closer in age to your mother than you are to your youngest brother
-You pull into a campground, and the neighbors start using their fingers to count how many are getting out of the car

What on earth...?

The take-out box was warm against my lap.

Mom and I chatted pleasantly about nothing much in particular, Luke tested out how it felt to put his tongue in the place where one of his front teeth had been. I had plenty of unused brain to engaged in thought.

"Boy Lyd, what's with your blog, you try to post once a day for a month and all you come up with is "I'm glad it's half-way through November." Where is your old creativity????

I was slightly ticked at myself.

I vaguely noticed two squad cars at the stop light as we turned toward home.

"Somebody's in trouble..."

Mom turned into our neighborhood, as in the flash of the headlights I caught a glimpse of two beads of lights about 4 feet off the ground-

"MOM STOP!!!" I cried.

I lurched forward against the dashboard, the car squealed to a stop.

Silence reigned as we stared at the road in front of us.

"Mom..." Luke sounded uncertain. "That's a cow?"

Cow? More like cows. A whole heard of them. In the middle of the street. Blocking the road home.

We were a bit shocked.

It was past sunset but suddenly the night was filled with flashing lights and loud voices.

The police had arrived to do what they do.

Ensure public safety and apprehend ummm... criminals.

Rather than handcuffs and guns these umm... criminals, were controlled by the good ol' arm waving, flashlight chasing and "GET GOING!! SHOO!!"

Recovering my surprise I glanced at Mom.

She was practically chocking with laughter.

"That's not funny." She said.

"But it really is!" we said at the same time, smiling ourselves silly.

"That's not something you see everyday." I pointed out.

"That's not something you'd see any day." Mom countered.

As we drove home in the cleared street I made a mental note. "That was something to post about."

Join the P___ Police Department!!
Stop criminals, do public service!
and maybe even herd cattle!!

"Be Still My Heart..."

"What light in yonder window breaks?
Is it giving my knees the shakes?
Is my worst night mere?
For Friday I shall enter the lair
Of The dreaded DMV
I pray to my friend, thee
For me to pray
As I drive my way.
Through the test
So I may go East and West,
With the license of a driver .
That is, if I do not waiver,
In my skill.
Oh be strong my will.
Eight-ten is the time
Heaven help me do fine.
For if I dare fail
I may never again be hale."

New Favorite Book Quote...

She had reached the age of seventeen, without having seen one amiable youth who could call forth her sensibility, without having inspired one real passion, and without having excited even any admiration but what was very moderate and very transient. This was strange indeed! But strange things may be generally accounted for if their cause be fairly searched out. There was not one lord in the neighbourhood; no - not even a baronet. There was not one family among their acquaintance who had reared and supported a boy accidentally found at their door - not one young man whose origin was unknown. Her father had no ward, and the squire of the parish no children.

But when a young lady is to be a heroine, the perverseness of forty surrounding families cannot prevent her. Something must and will happen to throw a hero in her way.

*strains eyes to horizon trying to spot hero being thrown in her way*
